…I am sat with a coffee, trying to work, but mainly thinking about nothing.
It’s not that easy to think about nothing—particularly in this day and age, when we can be constantly distracted externally by our phones and internally by the very long ‘to-do’ list lingering in our heads.
Often, we start by grabbing a few seconds of quiet between thoughts, growing this by focusing on our breathing and letting thoughts pass by rather than allowing them to dwell. Your mind is not used to being off duty, so it needs to learn that it’s perfectly safe to be empty for a while.
Now, as you interrupt that loop of constant mental noise, your brain can reset and your nervous system gets a break.
You’re no longer busy trying to problem solve or make progress in an area, so creativity takes advantage of the space you’ve created and your best ideas come to the surface.
You feel connected to the present—noticing more around you and paying attention to yourself, away from roles, labels, and expectations.
You’re no longer ruminating on the stresses and anxieties of life, and so the emotional load begins to lighten.
Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is nothing at all.
What might change for you if you gave yourself permission to do nothing—just for a moment?
